Turning Emerging Technology into Retail Advantage

The retail and consumer packaged goods industry in South Africa faces several unique challenges, but digital transformation using cloud, AI and digital platforms presents significant opportunities to unlock new value.

Challenges

Supply Chain Disruptions
and Logistics Inefficiencies

Fragmented logistics networks often result in unreliable transportation and costly delays. Limited inventory visibility creates frequent stockouts or overstocking, impacting both sales and customer satisfaction.

High Operating Costs and Margin Pressures

Rising input and energy costs, combined with manual processes, continue to drive up operating expenses. Currency fluctuations and broader economic volatility further strain already narrow profit margins.

Limited Customer Insights
and Personalisation

Many retailers still depend on outdated systems that lack real-time analytics. With customer information fragmented across multiple channels, delivering personalised experiences becomes increasingly difficult.

E-Commerce and
Omnichannel Gaps

While digital adoption remains uneven across the sector, consumer demand for omnichannel shopping experiences is rapidly growing. Legacy systems struggle to integrate online and offline operations effectively.

Cybersecurity
and Fraud Risks

As digital payments become more common, retailers face higher exposure to fraud and security threats. Many organisations lack the robust, cloud-based security measures needed to safeguard transactions and customer data.

Regulatory and
Compliance Burdens

E-tailers must navigate a complex regulatory landscape, including B-BBEE requirements and evolving data privacy laws. These challenges make secure, compliant cloud solutions essential to long-term growth.
